The question that I will be addressing in this blog will be Classify Characters: Characters in the Iliad show courage in different ways. What courageous actions does each of the following perform? What is your reaction and opinion to their courageous act? One character that I will be addressing to answer this question will be Agamemnon. The courageous actions that he performs are that he uses every opportunity to make others feel the effects of his. He always expects the largest portions of the plunder, even though he takes the fewest risks in battle. Additionally, he insists upon leading the army, even though his younger brother Menelaus, whose wife, Helen, was stolen by Paris, possesses the real grievance against the Trojans. He never allows the Achaeans to forget his kingly status. However, he remains fundamentally concerned with himself, and he has the cunning to manipulate people and situations for his own benefit. He does not trust his troops blindly, but tests their loyalty, When he commits wrongs, he do not go out of control and frustration like Achilles, but out of amoral, self-serving cunning. For this reason, Homer’s portrait of him ultimately proves unkind, and the reader never feels the same sympathy for him as for Achilles. My reaction and opinion to Agamemnon courageous act is that he is character that act first and thinks twice before doing things because he is a determined person who will strive to win the battle with fewer risks that it will takes. To me that seems like a lazy way of winning the battle but it works for Agamemnon. His cunning and loyalty makes everyone understand him when he is doing things like thinking for strategies within the war.
The next person that I will be talking to will be Achilles. Achilles possesses superhuman strength and has a close relationship with the gods, he may strike modern readers as less than heroic. They say (Achaeans) that he has marks of a great warrior, and indeed proves the mightiest man in the Achaean army, his driven primarily by a thirst for glory makes him a courageous character because he yearns to live a long, easy life, but he knows that his personal fate forces him to choose between the two. Ultimately, he is willing to sacrifice everything else so that his name will be remembered from everyone including his friends, family, and loved ones. To continue to become who is, his bloodlust, wrath, and pride continue to consume him. My opinion or to their courageous act for this character is that Achilles is a person who will kill you for his pride and honor.he will help people and the ones he loved only to help himself, his courageous act is that he is the type of person who let his pride and honor gets the best of him every time he go to war with is brother Agamemnon and that’s why I think of Achilles a person who let his pride and honor gets the best of him.
